가톨릭(Catholic) - 보편적이라는 뜻

**"가톨릭(Καθολικός, Katholikos)"**은 그리스어에서 유래한 말이에요.

• "카타(Kata)" = 전체에 걸쳐
• "홀로스(Holos)" = 전체, 모두

합치면 "보편적(Universal)", **"모든 사람을 위한"**이라는 뜻이에요.

왜 '보편적'일까요?

예수님은 말씀하셨어요:

"너희는 가서 모든 민족들을 제자로 삼아라" (마태 28,19)

가톨릭 교회는 태어난 곳, 피부색, 언어, 문화에 상관없이 모든 사람을 향해 열려있는 교회예요.

• 남미의 가톨릭 신자

같은 미사, 같은 신앙, 같은 공동체예요. 🌏✨

천주교(天主敎) - 하늘의 주를 섬기는 종교

한자문화권인 동양에서는 Catholic을 **"천주교"**라고 번역했어요.

天(하늘 천) + 主(주인 주) + 敎(가르침 교)

왜 '하늘의 주'일까요?

• 天(하늘): 초월적인 존재, 우리를 넘어선 신성함
• 主(주인): 창조주, 우주의 주인이신 분
• 敎(가르침): 그분의 가르침을 따르는 신앙

즉, "하느님의 교회", **"창조주를 섬기는 종교"**라는 의미예요.

한국에서의 특별한 의미

한국 천주교는 정말 특별해요!

• 선교사가 전한 게 아니라, 스스로 찾아서 받아들인 신앙
• 1784년 이승훈이 베이징에서 세례받고 돌아온 것이 시작
• 박해 속에서도 순교자들이 신앙을 지켜냄
• 103위 한국 순교 성인 - 세계가 놀란 신앙의 증거 

그래서 "천주교"라는 이름에는 한국 교회의 역사와 피땀이 녹아 있어요.

그럼 개신교와는 뭐가 다를까요?

많은 분들이 궁금해하시는 부분이죠. 간단히 정리해 볼게요.

가톨릭(천주교) vs 개신교

하지만 본질은 같아요!

• 둘 다 예수 그리스도를 구세주로 믿어요
• 둘 다 삼위일체 하느님을 믿어요
• 둘 다 사랑과 구원의 복음을 전해요

형제자매 교회예요. 표현은 다르지만, 같은 하느님 아버지의 자녀들이죠. 

'보편적'이라는 이름이 주는 의미

제가 37년 성당 생활하면서 느낀 **"가톨릭의 보편성"**은 이런 거예요:

1️⃣ 어디서나 집처럼

외국 여행 가서 성당에 들어가면, 언어는 달라도 미사는 똑같아요.

• 같은 순서
• 같은 독서
• 같은 복음
• 같은 기도

낯선 나라에서도 "아, 여기가 내 집이구나"라고 느껴져요. 🏠

2️⃣ 모든 사람을 품는 사랑

가톨릭 교회는:

• 부자도 가난한 이도
• 학자도 배우지 못한 이도
• 죄인도 의인도
• 모두를 품어요

예수님이 그러셨듯이요.

"나는 의인이 아니라 죄인을 부르러 왔다" (마르 2,17)

3️⃣ 시간과 공간을 넘어

• 2000년 전 사도들이 믿던 신앙
• 지금 우리가 믿는 신앙
• 똑같아요

이게 보편성이에요. 시대가 바뀌어도, 장소가 달라도, 변치 않는 진리를 전하는 거죠. 

왜 이 이름들이 중요할까요?

"가톨릭" - 모두를 위한 교회

이 이름은 우리에게 물어요:

"너는 정말 모든 사람을 받아들이니?"

• 나와 다른 사람
• 나를 싫어하는 사람
• 내가 이해 못하는 사람

진정한 보편성은 내 마음의 문을 여는 것이에요.

"천주교" - 하느님의 교회

이 이름은 우리에게 물어요:

"너는 정말 하느님을 주인으로 모시니?"

• 내 뜻보다 하느님 뜻을
• 내 영광보다 하느님 영광을
• 내 계획보다 하느님 계획을

진정한 신앙은 주인을 바꾸는 것이에요.

37년의 신앙 여정에서 배운 것

저는 어릴 때부터 성당을 다녔어요.

어린 시절엔 "가톨릭"이란 말이 그냥 우리 교회 이름인 줄만 알았어요.

하지만 시간이 지나면서 깨달았어요.

"보편적"이라는 건...

• 판단하지 않는 것
• 차별하지 않는 것
• 문을 닫지 않는 것

이게 얼마나 어려운 일인지 이제 알아요. 

우리는 쉽게 사람들을 나눠요:

• "우리 편/남의 편"
• "좋은 사람/나쁜 사람"
• "구원받을 사람/받지 못할 사람"

하지만 예수님은 모든 사람을 위해 십자가에 달리셨어요.

"하느님의 교회"라는 건...

• 내 교회가 아니라 하느님의 교회
• 내 뜻이 아니라 하느님의 뜻
• 내 영광이 아니라 하느님의 영광

이것도 얼마나 어려운지 몰라요.

우리는 쉽게 교회를 "내 것"처럼 여겨요:

• "내 자리"
• "우리 본당"
• "우리 공동체"

하지만 진짜 주인은 하느님이세요.

서로 다른 이름, 하나의 진리

가톨릭(Catholic) = 보편적
천주교(天主敎) = 하느님의 교회

두 이름 모두 같은 진리를 가리켜요:

모든 사람을 위한, 하느님의 교회 

우리에게 주어진 사명

사랑하는 친구들,

우리가 "가톨릭 신자", "천주교 신자"라고 할 때,

이건 단순한 종교적 라벨이 아니에요.

이건 사명이에요:

가톨릭 신자로서

보편적 사랑을 실천하라

• 차별하지 말고
• 판단하지 말고
• 모든 이를 형제자매로 보라

천주교 신자로서

하느님을 주인으로 모셔라

• 내 뜻이 아닌 그분의 뜻을
• 내 계획이 아닌 그분의 계획을
• 내 길이 아닌 그분의 길을

함께 걷는 여정

우리는 완벽하지 않아요.

• 때로 편협하고
• 때로 이기적이고
• 때로 하느님보다 내 뜻을 앞세워요

그래도 괜찮아요.

중요한 건, 우리가 같은 방향을 보고 있다는 거예요.

**"보편적 사랑"**이라는 북극성을 향해
**"하느님의 뜻"**이라는 나침반을 따라

함께 걷고 있어요. 

마지막으로

가톨릭(Catholic) - 경계 없는 사랑
천주교(天主敎) - 하늘 향한 신앙

이 두 이름이 우리 안에서 살아 숨쉴 때, 우리는 진정한 그리스도인이 되는 거예요.

"너희가 서로 사랑하면, 모든 사람이 그것을 보고 너희가 내 제자라는 것을 알게 될 것이다" (요한 13,35)

오늘도 보편적 사랑으로, 하느님을 주인으로 모시며,한 걸음씩 걸어가요, 여러분!

天主教 (Cheonjugyo) - Religion That Serves the Lord of Heaven

In East Asia, which has a Chinese character culture, Catholic was translated as "天主教 (Cheonjugyo)."

天 (Heaven) + 主 (Lord) + 教 (Teaching/Religion)

Why 'Lord of Heaven'?

天 (Heaven): Transcendent being, divinity beyond us

主 (Lord): Creator, the Lord of the universe

教 (Teaching): Faith that follows His teachings

In other words, it means "God's Church," "a religion that serves the Creator."

Special Meaning in Korea

Korean Catholicism is truly special!

It was not brought by missionaries, but a faith that was sought out and accepted voluntarily

It began in 1784 when Yi Seung-hun was baptized in Beijing and returned

Martyrs kept the faith even amidst persecution

103 Korean Martyr Saints - a witness of faith that amazed the world

That's why the name "Cheonjugyo" (天主教) contains the history, blood, and sweat of the Korean Church.

So, what's the Difference from Protestantism?

This is what many people are curious about. Let me summarize briefly.

The Meaning That the Name 'Universal' Gives

What I've felt about "Catholic universality" during my 37 years of church life is this:

1️⃣ Like Home Everywhere

When you enter a church while traveling abroad, even though the language is different, the Mass is the same.

Same order

Same readings

Same Gospel

Same prayers

Even in a foreign country, you feel "Oh, this is my home." 🏠

2️⃣ Love That Embraces Everyone

The Catholic Church embraces:

Both the rich and the poor

Both scholars and the unlearned

Both sinners and the righteous

Everyone

Just as Jesus did.

"I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners" (Mark 2:17)

3️⃣ Beyond Time and Space

The faith the apostles believed 2000 years ago

The faith we believe now

They're the same.

This is universality. Proclaiming unchanging truth regardless of changing times or different places. ⏳

Why Are These Names Important?

"Catholic" - Church for All

This name asks us:

"Do you really accept all people?"

People are different from me

People who dislike me

People I don't understand

True universality is opening the door of my heart.

"Cheonjugyo" - God's Church

This name asks us:

"Do you really serve God as Lord?"

God's will over my will

God's glory over my glory

God's plan over my plan

True faith is changing the master.

What I Learned from 37 Years of Faith Journey

I've been going to church since I was young.

As a child, I just thought "Catholic" was the name of our church.

But as time passed, I realized.

Being "universal" means...

Not judging

Not discriminating

Not closing doors

Now I know how difficult this is. 😌

We easily divide people:

"Our side/Their side"

"Good people/Bad people"

"Those who will be saved/Those who won't"

But Jesus died on the cross for all people.

Being "God's Church" means...

Not my church, but God's church

Not my will, but God's will

Not my glory, but God's glory

I don't even know how difficult this is.

We easily treat the church as "ours":

"My seat"

"Our parish"

"Our community"

But the real owner is God.

Different Names, One Truth

Catholic (Καθολικός) = Universal

Cheonjugyo (天主教) = God's Church

Both names point to the same truth:

A church of God, for all people 🌍✨

The Mission Given to Us

Dear friends,

When we say we are "Catholic believers" or "Cheonjugyo believers,"

This is not just a religious label.

This is a mission:

As Catholics

Practice universal love

Don't discriminate

Don't judge

See everyone as brothers and sisters

As Cheonjugyo Believers

Serve God as Lord

His will, not mine

His plan, not mine

His way, not mine

A Journey We Walk Together

We are not perfect.

Sometimes we're narrow-minded

Sometimes we're selfish

Sometimes we put our will before God's

And that's okay.

What's important is that we're looking in the same direction.

Toward the North Star of "universal love," Following the compass of "God's will"

We're walking together. 👣

Finally

Catholic (Καθολικός) - Love without boundaries

Cheonjugyo (天主教) - Faith toward heaven

When these two names live and breathe within us, we become true Christians.

"By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another" (John 13:35)
