Who we are
HolyLink (holylink.org) is a directory and community service for Korean Catholic parishes in the US and Canada, run as a volunteer project. For questions, or to see, correct or delete your information, email contact@holylink.org.
What we collect
- Account: email, name, password (stored encrypted), baptismal name (optional), profile photo (optional, location data removed), home parish (optional), confirmation that you are 18 or older, page and email language
- Church membership: church, role (member, parent, admin, …), approval status
- Board: your posts, comments and photos, and reports. Location and device data (EXIF) are removed from photos.
- Community: posts, comments and photos on the site-wide community, and reports (EXIF removed the same way)
- Business directory (when an owner applies): business name, category, business phone, address, website and email, description, logo and photo, parish (optional). To place it on the map, the business address (street, city, state and zip only — not the business name or owner details) is sent to the address-lookup services listed under “Services we use”. If you run the business from home, leave the street blank and the map shows only the city.
- Church admin applications: name, your role at the church, your note
- Altar servers (entered by parents and altar-server managers; adult servers apply themselves): child’s name (Korean/English), baptismal name, grade, schedule, attendance and unavailable dates. Server photos are added by the church’s altar-server manager only if that church turns photos on and after a parent agrees (location data removed; stored in a private folder that cannot be opened directly from the web).
- Created automatically: a login cookie, standard server logs (hosting), a record of notification emails sent, advertising and analytics cookies (see “Ads and visit statistics”)
We do not collect: phone numbers, home addresses or other personal contact details (business contact details you list in the directory are the exception), birth dates, children’s contact details, or payment details.
How we use it
- Logging in, managing your account, verifying your email
- Each church’s board and altar-server features (sign-ups, assignments, attendance)
- Notification emails (reminders, mass changes, notices, approval results)
- Church admins approving members and admins
We never sell your information or use it for advertising.
Who can see it
- Approved members of the same church: that church’s board posts and comments and the author’s name (baptismal name)
- That church’s admins: applicants’ names and emails, admin applications
- That church’s altar-server managers and viewers: the server roster and records (and server photos where the church has turned them on), linked parents’ names and emails
- Parents: their own children’s details and schedule, and on that church’s altar-server calendar the names of who serves at each mass (not other children’s photos, grades or attendance)
- Everyone: community posts, comments and photos with the author’s name (baptismal name; anonymous posts show no name), and approved business listings. Owners can edit or delete a listing at any time.
- HolyLink’s operator: as needed to run the service and fix problems
Church boards and altar pages cannot be seen by other churches and are not shown to search engines. The community and the business directory are public. Church information (address, mass times, office contact) is public.
Service providers
- Hostinger — web hosting (stores the data)
- Brevo — sends notification emails (recipient address and email content)
- OpenFreeMap — map images (tiles). When a map is shown, your browser loads them from OpenFreeMap’s servers, which receive your IP address. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors.
- U.S. Census Bureau geocoder · OpenStreetMap Nominatim — turn business and holy-site addresses into map coordinates; only the address (street, city, state, zip) is sent, once, when it is saved.
- Google — only if you choose to sign in with Google. Google tells us your name, email and Google account number. We do not receive your password or your Google profile photo. You can disconnect it in My account.
- Google AdSense · Google Analytics — ads and visit statistics; see “Ads and visit statistics” below.
Keeping and deleting
- Account information is kept while your account exists.
- Email sending records are removed after about 60 days.
- You can delete your account yourself in My account → Profile → Delete account, or email us. Deleting removes your account, name, baptismal name, email, profile photo, church memberships, business listings and any requests still waiting, right away. Posts and comments on boards and the community stay, shown as by “Former member”. To have them removed too, delete them first or email us. To leave only one church, press “Leave” next to it in My account → My churches. Altar-server records are also the church’s records, so we delete them together with that church’s admin.
- Server photos can be deleted by the altar-server manager at any time, and are hidden when the church turns photos off. To ask for a photo to be deleted, contact the church’s altar-server manager or email us.
- You can change your name, baptismal name, profile photo, home parish and notifications yourself in My account.
- Accounts from the earlier holylink.org were moved to the new HolyLink: name, baptismal name, email, sign-in details (encrypted password), profile photo, Google sign-in link and community posts. Other details such as phone number, bio and feast day were not moved and were deleted. If you do not want this, you can delete your account right away in My account.
Notification emails
Altar-server emails can be turned off with the “unsubscribe” link in each email or in My account. Emails about sign-up, passwords and admin access are always sent, to keep your account safe.
Minors
Only people 18 or older can sign up. Altar servers do not have accounts; parents and altar-server managers enter only what the schedule needs (name, baptismal name, grade).
Ads and visit statistics
HolyLink shows Google AdSense ads to cover running costs and uses Google Analytics to see how the site is used so we can improve it.
- Ads: third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on those visits.
- Turning off personalized ads: you can opt out of personalized advertising in Google Ads Settings, and opt out of other vendors’ cookies at aboutads.info. See how Google uses data from sites that use its services.
- Visit statistics: Google Analytics uses cookies to record which pages are viewed, device and browser type, and approximate location (estimated from your IP address). We do not send your name, email or other account details to Google. To leave the statistics out, use the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
- You can also delete or block cookies in your browser settings. Blocking the login cookie means you cannot stay signed in.
