Bishop of Vercelli in Italy, he was appointed Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem to lead the Church in the Holy Land. He wrote a rule of life for the hermits on Mount Carmel, laying the foundation of the Carmelite Order, and was murdered at Acre.
Life
Saint Albert of Jerusalem was born in Italy in the mid-twelfth century. He entered the Canons Regular of the Holy Cross and later became bishop of Bobbio and then of Vercelli, working for peace, including by mediating between the pope and the emperor.
In 1205 he was appointed Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, and because Jerusalem had fallen, he resided at Acre. There, at the request of hermits living on Mount Carmel, he wrote a rule of life for them, which became the foundation of the Carmelite Rule. In 1214, during a procession on the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, he was killed by a man he had reprimanded.
Spirituality
Saint Albert's spirituality is wisdom in the service of peace and a life that abides in God's word. The rule he wrote is short, but it carries the spirit of meditating on the law of the Lord day and night, and it has become the root of Carmelite prayer and contemplative life today.
Reflection
Saint Albert helped people of prayer to abide in God's word. Why not open the Bible for a few minutes today and slowly ponder a single verse?
