Anthony Mary Gianelli was a priest in Chiavari, Italy, who founded a congregation of sisters to care for the sick and orphans. As bishop of Bobbio, he devoted himself to forming clergy and renewing his diocese.

Life

Anthony Mary Gianelli was born in 1789 in the countryside of Liguria, Italy. After ordination he became a fine preacher and educator, and as a parish priest in Chiavari he cared devotedly for his people.

In 1829 he founded the Daughters of Our Lady of the Garden to educate poor girls and care for the sick. In 1838 he became bishop of Bobbio and worked for the formation of priests and the renewal of the diocese. He died in 1846 and was canonized in 1951.

Spirituality

Gianelli's spirituality is a shepherd's love expressed through teaching and pastoral care. He believed faith grows through the Word and instruction, and that the poor too should have the chance to learn. The congregation he founded carries that love forward.

Reflection

Saint Anthony Mary Gianelli opened the door of learning to poor girls. What door can I open for neighbors or young people who lack opportunities?
