Third- and fourth-century hermit of the Egyptian desert, known as the father of monasticism. His life of prayer drew many disciples.
Life
Anthony was born around 250 into a Christian family in Egypt. Orphaned young, he heard in church the Gospel words, "Go, sell what you possess and give to the poor." He gave away his property and went into the desert to live a life of prayer and penance.
As others came to imitate him, he became known as the father of monasticism. During persecution he went to Alexandria to encourage the faithful, and in the Arian controversy he stood with the orthodox faith. The Life of Anthony written by St. Athanasius deeply shaped later monastic life. He is said to have died around 356 at a very great age.
Spirituality
Anthony's spirituality is the simplicity of a heart fixed on God alone. In the silence of the desert he struggled with temptation and learned the humility of relying on God rather than on himself. Silence, prayer and work filled his days. His life remains a model for countless religious to this day.
Reflection
Anthony changed his whole life after hearing a single Gospel verse. The Word gains power when it is lived, not only heard. Which word from today's Mass might I actually put into practice?
