Aquila and Priscilla were a Jewish-Christian couple, tentmakers by trade, who worked alongside the apostle Paul. In Corinth, Ephesus and Rome they opened their home as a meeting place for the Church.

Life

Saints Aquila and Priscilla (Prisca) were a Jewish Christian couple in the New Testament. According to the Acts of the Apostles, they came to Corinth when Emperor Claudius expelled the Jews from Rome, and they welcomed the apostle Paul, a fellow tentmaker, into their home and worked alongside him.

They later went with Paul to Ephesus, where they explained the way of God more accurately to the gifted preacher Apollos. In his letters Paul sends greetings to the church that met in their house and thanks them for risking their own necks for his life. Nothing certain is known about the end of their lives.

Spirituality

The spirituality of Aquila and Priscilla is the love of a couple who served together. They opened their workplace and their home to the Gospel, and with warm hospitality and humble teaching they built up the early Church side by side. Their life shows that lay married couples can be true co-workers in proclaiming the Gospel.

Reflection

The home of Aquila and Priscilla was a place where the Church gathered. How could our home open its doors today to neighbors and to our community? It can begin with one small invitation.
