Fourth-century bishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia and Doctor of the Church. He shaped Eastern monastic life and built a great center of care for the poor.

Life

Basil was born around 330 into a devout family in Caesarea in Cappadocia, Asia Minor. He studied in Constantinople and Athens, where he formed a lifelong friendship with Gregory of Nazianzus. Together with his brother Gregory of Nyssa, they are known as the Cappadocian Fathers.

Turning from worldly success, Basil embraced monastic life and drew up guidelines for community monasticism that shaped monastic life in the East. Made bishop of Caesarea in 370, he defended the Nicene faith against the Arians and built a large complex to care for the poor and the sick. He died in 379, and the Church remembers him on January 2 together with his friend Gregory.

Spirituality

Basil's spirituality unites prayer with concrete love. He saw mutual service within community as the way to become like Christ, and he never separated guarding the true faith from caring for the poor.

Reflection

Basil was a profound theologian and also a shepherd who made sure the hungry were fed. His love did not stop at words. Is my faith today moving both my mind and my hands?
