Pope in the late third century, shortly before the great persecution of Diocletian broke out. Said to have come from Dalmatia, he was buried in the catacombs, where his epitaph has survived.

Life

Pope Caius is known to have led the Church of Rome from about 283 to about 296. Little about his life is known for certain. The stories that he came from Dalmatia or was a relative of the emperor are later traditions.

He led the Church just before the great persecution under Emperor Diocletian began. According to tradition he cared for the faithful in difficult times, and after his death he was buried in the Catacomb of Callixtus in Rome. The Church remembers him on April 22.

Spirituality

Pope Caius' spirituality is that of a quiet shepherd before the storm. Though not widely known, he faithfully guarded a Church on the eve of persecution and strengthened the faith of his people. Hidden faithfulness also builds up the Church.

Reflection

Little is known of Pope Caius, yet he faithfully cared for the flock entrusted to him. What small responsibility should I keep faithfully, even if no one notices?
