Cajetan was an Italian priest who co-founded the Theatines to renew the clergy. Trusting wholly in divine providence, he established hospitals and charitable works for the poor.

Life

Saint Cajetan was born in 1480 into a noble family in Vicenza, Italy. After studying law he worked at the papal court in Rome, where he joined the Oratory of Divine Love, a fellowship devoted to prayer and charity, and was ordained a priest later in life.

Convinced that the Church urgently needed renewal, in 1524 he founded the Theatines together with Gian Pietro Carafa, later Pope Paul IV, and others. Its members owned no property and relied on God's providence alone, working for holiness of life among the clergy and serving the sick and the poor. He died in Naples in 1547 and was canonized in 1671.

Spirituality

Saint Cajetan's spirituality is complete trust in God's providence. Rather than storing up out of worry for tomorrow, he lived trusting that God would supply what was needed, and on that trust he set out to renew the Church and serve the poor.

Reflection

Saint Cajetan trusted that God would provide what was needed. Why not offer a prayer today entrusting to the Lord the one thing you worry about most right now?
