Born in Cavaillon, France, he turned from a worldly youth to conversion and priesthood. He founded the Fathers of Christian Doctrine to teach the faith to ordinary people in a clear and orderly way.
Life
César de Bus was born in 1544 in Cavaillon in southern France. As a young man he served as a soldier and lived a worldly life, but through the influence of devout people around him he was converted. He then studied theology and was ordained a priest in 1582.
Seeing that many people did not know even the basics of the faith, he devoted himself to catechesis, and in 1592 he founded the Fathers of Christian Doctrine for this mission. In his later years he lost his sight but kept on teaching. He died in Avignon in 1607 and was canonized by Pope Francis in 2022.
Spirituality
César's spirituality is the love that hands on the faith simply and kindly. He believed catechesis is the foundation that leads people to God. That he kept teaching even after going blind shows how deep his passion for sharing the Word was.
Reflection
Saint César gave his life to teaching the basics of the faith. What help or prayer can I offer for my parish's religious education and its catechists?
