Crucified alongside Jesus, this criminal is known in tradition by the name Dismas. He admitted his guilt and asked the Lord to remember him, receiving the promise that he would be in paradise that very day.
Life
The Good Thief was one of the two criminals crucified with Jesus. According to Luke's Gospel, when the other mocked Jesus, he admitted his own guilt and asked, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." Jesus promised him, "Today you will be with me in Paradise."
The Gospels do not give his name. The name Dismas comes from later apocryphal writings, and the various stories about his earlier life grew up as legend. The Church remembers him as a model of repentance.
Spirituality
Dismas' spirituality is humble trust at the last moment. He had no merits to offer, yet he honestly admitted his wrongs and recognized a king in the suffering Jesus. His brief prayer shows that it is never too late for God's mercy.
Reflection
With the simple words "Remember me," the Good Thief was promised Paradise. Am I putting off my return to the Lord, thinking it is too late or I have gone too far? Why not pray his short prayer today?
