Elisha was the disciple of Elijah and received his mantle along with his prophetic mission. In the northern kingdom of Israel he worked many signs of God's power and led the people back to the Lord.
Life
Elisha was a prophet in the northern kingdom of Israel in the ninth century before Christ, the disciple and successor of Elijah. According to the Books of Kings, he was plowing his field when Elijah threw his cloak over him, and he left everything to follow him.
As Elijah was taken up to heaven, Elisha asked for a double share of his master's spirit, and for many years afterward he proclaimed God's word in Israel. Scripture tells how he restored the son of the Shunammite woman to life and how the Syrian commander Naaman was healed of leprosy in the Jordan at his word, a healing Jesus himself recalled. The Church remembers him on June 14.
Spirituality
Elisha's spirituality is a prompt response to God's call and a faithful carrying forward of the mission he received from his teacher. He wanted God's power, not his own name, to be seen, and he brought God's mercy even to Naaman, a foreigner. His miracles were signs that God does not forget poor widows and the sick.
Reflection
Elisha put down his plow and followed Elijah at once. How am I passing on to the next generation the faith I received from those who went before me? Let us think of one small step.
