She entered the Carmel of Dijon and lived in deep contemplation of the Trinity dwelling within the soul. She died young after a painful illness, yet her prayers and letters continue to nourish many believers.
Life
Saint Elizabeth of the Trinity, born Élisabeth Catez in France in 1880, grew up in Dijon. Hot-tempered as a child, she opened her heart deeply to God around the time of her First Communion and was a lively girl with a remarkable gift for the piano.
In 1901 she entered the Carmel of Dijon and received the name Elizabeth of the Trinity. She lived profoundly the communion with the Trinity dwelling within her and left many letters and prayers. After great suffering from Addison's disease she died in 1906 at the age of twenty-six. Pope Francis canonized her in 2016.
Spirituality
Elizabeth's spirituality is living with the Triune God who dwells within. She desired to offer herself as a "praise of glory" and remained in that quiet presence even in suffering. For her, heaven was not far away but already begun within the soul.
Reflection
Elizabeth believed God already dwelt within her and spoke with Him there. In the middle of a busy day, shall I close my eyes for a moment and greet the Lord within me?
