Third-century pope who organized the Church of Rome and was martyred under Emperor Decius in 250.
Life
Fabian served as bishop of Rome, that is, as pope, from 236 to 250. According to tradition he was a layman present at the papal election when a dove came to rest on his head, and the people took it as a sign of God's will and chose him.
He is known for organizing the Roman church, dividing it into districts so that deacons could care for the poor. He was martyred in 250 during the persecution of Emperor Decius and was buried in the Catacomb of Callixtus. The Church remembers him on January 20 together with St. Sebastian.
Spirituality
Fabian's spirituality is faithful service to the Church in the place entrusted to him. Even in a time of persecution he cared for the community with order and care, and in the end bore witness to the faith with his life. His life shows how great a strength quiet faithfulness can be.
Reflection
Fabian accepted an unexpected call and remained faithful to the end. God's call is always larger than our plans. How do I respond when God entrusts me with something I did not expect?
