Enslaved woman martyred with St. Perpetua at Carthage in 203, shortly after giving birth in prison.
Life
Felicity was a catechumen and a slave woman arrested with Perpetua in Carthage, North Africa, in 203. She was pregnant when arrested. Since the law delayed the execution of pregnant women, she prayed, fearing she would not be able to die with her companions.
According to the Passion of Perpetua and Felicity, she gave birth to a daughter in prison two days before the execution, and a Christian woman took the child to raise. Felicity then died a martyr with Perpetua in the arena. The story of two women of very different social standing dying side by side shows that all are one in Christ.
Spirituality
Felicity's spirituality is Christ's strength revealed in the weakest condition. When she was mocked in the pain of childbirth, the Passion records that she answered that now she herself suffered, but then Another would suffer in her.
Reflection
Felicity the slave and Perpetua the noblewoman became sisters in Christ. Do I divide people in my community by status or background?
