Bishop of Geneva and Doctor of the Church (1567–1622). His Introduction to the Devout Life taught that holiness is for everyone.
Life
Francis de Sales was born in 1567 into a noble family in Savoy. After studying law and theology in Paris and Padua, he became a priest despite his father's opposition. In the Calvinist-dominated Chablais region he preached patiently and handed out written leaflets, leading many back to the Catholic faith.
In 1602 he became bishop of Geneva, residing in Annecy, and wrote the Introduction to the Devout Life and the Treatise on the Love of God, teaching that lay people can live holy lives in ordinary circumstances. With St. Jane Frances de Chantal he founded the Visitation Order. He died in Lyon in 1622, was canonized in 1665, declared a Doctor of the Church in 1877, and is patron of writers and journalists.
Spirituality
Francis de Sales's spirituality is gentleness and holiness in daily life. He taught that holiness is not only for monasteries but means loving God at home, at work and in one's own state of life. He believed that gentle love moves hearts more than severity.
Reflection
Francis de Sales taught that we can become holy right where we are. Holiness begins with small kindnesses. Who at home or at work could I treat a little more gently today?
