Consecrated to God as a young girl near Paris, she lived a life of prayer, fasting and charity. During invasions and sieges she strengthened the people's courage and fed the hungry, and she is honored as patroness of Paris.

Life

Saint Genevieve is said to have been born in the fifth century at Nanterre, near present-day Paris. According to tradition, as a young girl she met Saint Germanus, bishop of Auxerre, who encouraged her to consecrate herself to God, and she went on to live as a consecrated virgin given to prayer, fasting and charity.

Most of what we have comes from a later life of the saint, so little is known for certain. Tradition says that when the Huns approached Paris she urged the people not to flee but to pray, and the city was spared. Another story tells of her bringing food into the besieged city. She remains beloved as the patron saint of Paris.

Spirituality

Genevieve's spirituality is a faith that stands firm in prayer in the face of fear. In the stories handed down about her, she urges anxious people to trust in God and personally cares for the hungry. Hers was a life in which prayer and practical love were bound together.

Reflection

Frightening news easily shakes us. Genevieve urged people to pray first. If something is making you anxious these days, could you entrust it to God first today?
