Eleventh-century German king and Holy Roman Emperor who worked for just rule and Church reform.

Life

Henry was a German ruler born around 973. After serving as Duke of Bavaria, he became King of Germany in 1002 and was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 1014. His wife Cunigunde is also honored as a saint.

While striving to keep peace in his realm, he supported church reform and was a patron of monasteries. In particular he founded the diocese of Bamberg in 1007 and built its cathedral, making it a center of faith for the region. He died in 1024 and was canonized in 1146. Later generations added various legends about his piety.

Spirituality

Henry's spirituality is using power as a means to serve God and the people. He regarded a ruler's responsibilities as a mission of faith, and he gave of what he had so that the Church and the community might stand firm. He shows that even a ruler can become holy through prayer and justice.

Reflection

Henry used his position and wealth for the Church and his people. Even small influence can be used for good. However small my influence, how might I use it for my neighbors?
