A second-century bishop of Rome, said to have been of Greek origin. He guided the Church as Gnostic teachers spread their ideas and is remembered for safeguarding doctrine and ordering the clergy.
Life
Saint Hyginus was a pope who led the Church of Rome in the mid-second century. He is thought to have reigned for a few years from around 136, but very little is known for certain about his life. Later records say he was of Greek origin, though this is hard to confirm.
In his time various Gnostic teachings were arriving in Rome and unsettling the faith of the Church. Hyginus is remembered as a shepherd who cared for the community and held fast to the faith handed down from the apostles amid this confusion. He was once venerated as a martyr, but the basis for this is uncertain. The Church remembers him on January 11.
Spirituality
In Pope Hyginus we see a hidden faithfulness. Few records remain, yet he led the Church and guarded the apostolic faith at a time when new teachings were in fashion. Thanks to such shepherds, whose names are barely remembered, the faith has come down to us today.
Reflection
We know little about Pope Hyginus, but he kept the faith in an unsettled age. Amid ideas that change like fashions, what anchors you as you keep your faith?
