Bishop of Benevento martyred in the early fourth century; patron of Naples.

Life

Saint Januarius is said to have been bishop of Benevento in southern Italy. Little is known for certain about his life; tradition holds that around 305, during the persecution of Emperor Diocletian, he was martyred with companions at Pozzuoli near Naples.

His remains were later brought to Naples, and he became the city's patron saint. The cathedral of Naples keeps a glass vial venerated as containing his blood, and for centuries it has been recorded that on certain days, including his feast, the solid contents turn liquid.

The Church remembers him on September 19.

Spirituality

The spirituality of Januarius is a shepherd's faithfulness. Tradition says he gave his life in persecution while caring for his people. That the people of Naples have sought his intercession for centuries shows the belief that the saints still pray with us.

Reflection

We believe in the communion of saints. Today, would you ask a saint you especially love to pray with you for your family and your community?
