John preached throughout southern Spain and became known as the Apostle of Andalusia. His influence on priestly formation and spiritual direction led to his being named a Doctor of the Church in 2012.

Life

John of Avila was born around 1499 in Almodóvar del Campo, Spain. He studied at Salamanca and Alcalá, was ordained a priest, and gave his inheritance to the poor. He hoped to go as a missionary to the Americas but was advised to stay and preach in Andalusia.

His powerful preaching earned him the title "Apostle of Andalusia," though he was once misunderstood and imprisoned by the Inquisition. He was a spiritual guide to many, including Teresa of Ávila and John of God, and worked for the formation of priests. He died in 1569, was canonized in 1970, and was declared a Doctor of the Church in 2012.

Spirituality

John of Avila's spirituality is deep meditation on the Word and on Christ's love. He taught that true conversion begins when we take to heart the love of God revealed on the cross, and he believed that the Church is renewed when its priests are holy.

Reflection

Saint John of Avila was a spiritual father to many priests and saints. Will I offer a prayer today for the priests of my parish and for priestly vocations?
