Martyred for the faith at Dongnae (Busan) in the Byeongin persecution, September 1868. Beatified by Pope Francis on August 16, 2014.

Life

John Yi Jeong-sik was a former military officer who became a lay leader (hoejang) of the faithful. Having served as an officer, after embracing the faith he devoted himself to caring for the community of believers.

Having fled the persecution via Gijang and Gyeongju to Subakgol in Ulsan, he was tracked down there in 1868 by police from Dongnae and taken to Dongnae in Gyeongsang Province. He did not abandon his faith through interrogation and punishment, and he was martyred at Dongnae in September 1868 together with Martin Yang Jae-hyeon. He is remembered today by the Church in the Busan area.

Pope Francis declared him Blessed on August 16, 2014.

Spirituality

The spirituality of John Yi Jeong-sik is loyalty as a soldier of Christ. Once an officer defending the country, he gave himself to guarding the Kingdom of God and his fellow believers. Fighting not with worldly power but with faith, he shows where true courage comes from.

Reflection

John Yi Jeong-sik offered an officer's courage to God and his fellow believers. How can I use my own talents and experience for the Church? Why not look for a place in my parish where my gifts are needed today?
