Korean layman who kept the faith in the persecution of 1866 and was martyred on December 23, 1866.
Life
Joseph Cho Yun-ho was born in 1848. The son of Peter Cho Hwa-so, he grew up in the faith while farming alongside his father in Jeolla Province.
In the Byeong-in persecution of 1866 he was arrested with his father and taken to Jeonju. Even after his father was martyred first, the young man endured harsh torture and kept the faith.
He was beheaded at the Seocheon-gyo market place in Jeonju on December 23, 1866, ten days after his father's martyrdom. He was then only about eighteen years old.
Spirituality
Joseph Cho Yun-ho's spirituality is the courage to make an inherited faith one's own and keep it to the end. He learned the faith from his father, and after losing him he still confessed that faith alone. He shows that faith lives on from generation to generation.
Reflection
Joseph Cho Yun-ho made the faith he received from his father his own. How am I nurturing the faith my parents gave me? Why not offer a prayer of thanks for those who handed it on?
