Korean laywoman who kept the faith in the persecution of 1839 and was martyred in September 1839.

Life

Lucia Kim was born in 1769 and is the elder of the two saints who share this name. She is remembered as having a hunched back, and though her life was far from comfortable, she treasured and kept her faith.

When she was arrested in the Gihae persecution of 1839, she was already past seventy, so she was spared corporal punishment, yet through repeated and cunning interrogation she did not deny her faith. After a long imprisonment and much suffering, she died in prison in September 1839, receiving the crown of martyrdom.

Spirituality

Lucia Kim's spirituality is the strength of God revealed in weakness. Though she was elderly and physically frail, her faith was as firm as anyone's. God does great things through those the world considers insignificant.

Reflection

Lucia Kim was a frail elderly woman, yet she showed a faith stronger than most. Do I think my shortcomings make me useless to God? Today, try entrusting even your weaknesses to the Lord.
