Chosen to replace Judas Iscariot among the Apostles, as told in Acts chapter 1.

Life

Matthias is the apostle chosen to fill the place left by Judas Iscariot. According to the Acts of the Apostles, after the Ascension Peter said that one of those who had accompanied Jesus from John's baptism until the Ascension must become a witness to the resurrection.

Two candidates were put forward, and after prayer the community cast lots, and Matthias was added to the Twelve. Scripture tells us nothing more about him, and the traditions about where he preached and how his life ended differ from one another.

Spirituality

Matthias's spirituality is quiet, long-standing faithfulness. He had stayed near Jesus from the beginning without drawing attention, and when the praying community called him, he willingly accepted the weighty mission of an apostle. He shows that God calls people through the prayer of the community.

Reflection

Matthias was not prominent, yet he had been with Jesus from the beginning. God sees every act of faithfulness. Do I stay close to the Lord steadily, even when no one notices?
