Archangel who defends God’s people and fights evil; his name means “Who is like God?”

Life

Saint Michael is an archangel named in Scripture. The name Michael means Who is like God?, a name that confesses that God alone is Lord.

In the Book of Daniel he is the great prince who protects God's people, and in the Letter of Jude he is called an archangel. In the Book of Revelation, Michael and his angels fight the dragon and cast him out of heaven. For this reason the Church has honored him as the angel who protects God's people against evil.

The Church remembers him with the archangels Gabriel and Raphael on September 29.

Spirituality

The spirituality of Saint Michael is complete loyalty to God. His very name is a confession that rejects pride and exalts God alone. He is a protector in our spiritual battles, and many of the faithful have drawn strength from prayer to him.

Reflection

We are not alone in the face of temptation and fear. If something is shaking your heart today, would you pray to Saint Michael and ask for his protection?
