Fleeing persecution in Egypt, he withdrew into the desert and is remembered as the first Christian hermit, living alone in prayer for many years. Tradition says Anthony of Egypt visited him in old age, and he is honored as a model of solitary life.

Life

Saint Paul of Thebes is known as the first hermit. His story comes to us through a short life written by Saint Jerome in the late fourth century, which contains many legendary elements, making historical facts hard to separate out.

According to Jerome, Paul grew up in a wealthy Egyptian family but fled into the desert to escape the persecution of Emperor Decius, spending the rest of his life in prayer in a cave. Tradition tells that in old age he was visited by Saint Anthony, that a raven brought him bread each day, and that when he died lions dug his grave. He is honored as a forerunner of the desert monastic tradition.

Spirituality

The Paul of tradition shows a life that looks to God alone in silence and solitude. Leaving the noise of the world, he lived simply and trusted that God would provide what he needed. His story awakens in us prayer and deep trust in God's providence.

Reflection

We cannot all go off to the desert, but we can switch off the noise for a while and be alone with God. Why not put down your phone today and spend five minutes in silent prayer?
