Petronilla was a virgin of the early Roman Church who has long been venerated at her tomb in the Catacomb of Domitilla. Tradition holds that she died a martyr, faithful to her consecration to Christ.
Life
Petronilla was a virgin venerated in the early Roman Church. Her name is associated with the Catacomb of Domitilla in Rome, where an ancient fresco depicting her was found. Almost nothing about her life, however, is known for certain.
Later legend presents her as the daughter of the Apostle Peter, but this seems to have arisen from the similarity of their names and lacks clear historical basis. It is also uncertain whether she was a martyr. Even so, devotion to her is ancient, and there is an altar dedicated to her in Saint Peter's Basilica.
Spirituality
Petronilla's spirituality is hidden faithfulness. All that remains of her is her name and an ancient devotion, yet the early Christians saw in her a heart wholly given to God. God treasures even the lives the world does not remember.
Reflection
Most of Saint Petronilla's life has been forgotten, but her faith is remembered. What would I like others to remember about me?
