He led the Roman Church in the later third century during a lull in persecution. Few details of his life survive, but he was buried in the papal crypt of the Catacomb of Callixtus.

Life

Saint Eutychian was pope from about 275 to 283, in the later third century. Almost nothing is known for certain about his life and work.

He was buried in the Crypt of the Popes in Rome's Catacomb of Saint Callistus, where a fragment of his epitaph is said to have been found. Later sources say he personally buried martyrs, but this is hard to confirm. His pontificate is thought to have fallen in a relatively quiet period between persecutions. The Church remembers him on December 8.

Spirituality

Pope Eutychian was a shepherd who cared for the Church in a lull between persecutions. Even uneventful times were precious for the Church, a season to deepen faith and grow the community. His quiet service shows how much faithfulness in ordinary days matters.

Reflection

Eutychian quietly served the Church in an uneventful time. On this ordinary day, to what do I want to be faithful?
