He became Bishop of Rome in the age of Constantine and led the Church for less than a year. Tradition credits him with founding a basilica in Rome and helping to organize the Church in its new time of peace.

Life

Saint Mark was a fourth-century pope, elected early in 336 and dying that autumn. Because his pontificate lasted less than a year, little is known for certain about his life and work.

Tradition holds that he founded a church in Rome that became the origin of today's Basilica of San Marco, and that he built a cemetery church outside the city. He was a shepherd in the period after Constantine, when the Church, newly free, was establishing itself. The Church remembers him on October 7.

Spirituality

Pope Mark's spirituality is that of a shepherd faithful to his task even in a short time. Few records remain, but his service in providing places for the community to gather, as the Church emerged from persecution, left a lasting mark.

Reflection

Pope Mark served the Church for less than a year. With what kind of love would I like to fill the one day I have been given today?
