Raymond was delivered by caesarean section after his mother died, earning the name Nonnatus, not born. He joined the Mercedarians, ransomed captives and suffered in their place, and is patron of expectant mothers and childbirth.
Life
Saint Raymond Nonnatus is said to have been born in Catalonia, Spain, in the early thirteenth century. His nickname Nonnatus, meaning 'not born,' comes from the tradition that his mother died in childbirth and he was delivered by caesarean section.
He joined the Mercedarians, an order dedicated to ransoming Christians held captive. According to tradition, in North Africa he gave himself as a hostage for captives and, for preaching the Gospel, suffered having his lips padlocked shut. He died around 1240. Many of these stories come from later tradition, but he is honored today as a patron of expectant mothers and childbirth.
Spirituality
Saint Raymond Nonnatus's spirituality is a love that gives itself for the freedom of others. In the spirit of the Mercedarians, he was ready to be bound in place of a captive if need be. His life calls to mind the love of Christ, who became our ransom.
Reflection
Saint Raymond is a patron of expectant mothers and childbirth. Why not pray today for families awaiting a baby and for mothers about to give birth, and for the freedom of all who are held captive?
