Servatius was bishop of Tongeren and defended orthodox faith against the Arian heresy. He later moved to Maastricht, where he died and where he is still honored as patron of the city.

Life

Servatius was a fourth-century bishop of Tongeren who led the Church in what is now Belgium and the Netherlands. Around 343 he attended the Council of Serdica, where he supported Saint Athanasius and the orthodox faith against the Arians.

He is also known to have attended the Council of Rimini in 359. Tradition says he moved to Maastricht late in life and died there around 384; the Basilica of Saint Servatius built over his tomb remains a place of pilgrimage. Many stories about him are later legends.

Spirituality

Servatius' spirituality is a shepherd's responsibility to guard the true faith amid confusion. When the Arian controversy shook the Church, he held firmly to the faith that confesses Christ as true God.
