One of the Twelve Apostles, called Simon the Zealot.

Life

Saint Simon was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. His name appears in the Gospel lists of apostles; Luke and Acts call him Simon the Zealot, and Matthew and Mark call him Simon the Cananaean, to distinguish him from Simon called Peter.

The name Zealot is thought to mean that he once belonged to a group known for fierce zeal for the Law, or simply that he had a passionate character. Beyond this, the Gospels tell us almost nothing about him.

Western tradition says he preached with the apostle Jude Thaddeus in Persia and died a martyr there, but this is not certain. The Church remembers him with Jude on October 28.

Spirituality

Simon's spirituality is zeal purified and turned toward Christ. Whatever passion he once had, he poured it into following Jesus. As a little-known apostle, he also shows a life of faithful service to the Gospel without seeking a name.

Reflection

We know almost nothing about Simon, but we know he followed Jesus. Even if no one notices, what can I do faithfully for the Lord today?
