Titus Brandsma was a Dutch Carmelite priest, scholar and journalist who resisted Nazi propaganda and was martyred in the Dachau concentration camp.

Life

Titus Brandsma was born in 1881 in the Friesland region of the Netherlands. He entered the Carmelites and became a priest, studied in Rome, and later taught philosophy and mysticism at the Catholic University of Nijmegen, where he also served as rector. He was active in journalism too, supporting the Catholic press and caring spiritually for journalists.

When Nazi Germany occupied the Netherlands, he carried the bishops’ message to editors that Catholic newspapers must not print Nazi propaganda, and he was arrested in 1942. After passing through several prisons and camps he was sent to Dachau, where he was killed that July. He was beatified in 1985 and canonized in 2022.

Spirituality

Titus Brandsma’s spirituality joins Carmelite contemplation with courage for the truth. He sought God’s presence in daily life and in suffering, and it is said that even in the camp he consoled fellow prisoners and prayed for his enemies. For him, scholarship and journalism were ways of serving God, who is Truth.

Reflection

Saint Titus believed that words and writing must serve the truth, and he gave his life for it. Could I look again at the words I write and share today, and ask whether they carry truth and love?
