Bishop of Poetovio, today's Ptuj in Slovenia, he was among the earliest Latin writers to comment on Scripture. He is best known for his commentary on the Book of Revelation and died a martyr under Diocletian.
Life
Saint Victorinus was bishop of Pettau (today's Ptuj in Slovenia) in the late third century. He is counted among the earliest writers to compose commentaries on Scripture in Latin.
He is said to have written commentaries on many books of the Bible, but only a few survive in full today, such as his commentary on the Book of Revelation. Saint Jerome also mentions his writings. He is believed to have been martyred around 304, during the persecution of Emperor Diocletian. The Church remembers him on November 2.
Spirituality
The spirituality of Victorinus is a shepherd's love for God's Word and zeal to open it to the faithful. In an age of persecution he read Revelation and passed on the hope that Christ triumphs even in suffering. He bore witness with his life to the Word he taught.
Reflection
Even in the dark days of persecution, Victorinus offered hope through the Scriptures. What verse of the Bible is holding my heart these days, and with whom would I like to share it?
