Martyred for the faith at Daegu in the Gihae persecution, May 26, 1839. Beatified by Pope Francis on August 16, 2014.
Life
Andrew Pak Sa-ui was a believer from a yangban (noble) family. Seized in Gyeongsang Province during the Jeonghae persecution of 1827, he was imprisoned in Daegu, where he remained for many years.
As a man of standing he might have won release simply by renouncing his faith, but he chose God over worldly honor. On May 26, 1839, during the Gihae persecution, he was martyred at Daegu together with Andrew Yi Jae-haeng and Andrew Kim Sa-geon.
Pope Francis declared him Blessed on August 16, 2014.
Spirituality
The spirituality of Andrew Pak Sa-ui is choosing to put God first. He could lay down noble rank, reputation and comfort because he knew something more precious. He shows that true honor is found in God.
Reflection
Andrew Pak Sa-ui chose God over rank and reputation. Do I sometimes hesitate to show my faith because of what others might think? Why not make one small choice today that puts God first?
