Korean laywoman who kept the faith in the persecution of 1839 and was martyred on September 3, 1839.
Life
Barbara Kwon Hui was born in 1794. The wife of the lay leader Augustine Yi Kwang-hon, she lived her faith with her husband and opened their home as a gathering place for the faithful.
Arrested with her family early in the persecution of 1839, she had to bear the death of her husband, who was martyred first in May. Keeping the faith through that grief and through harsh punishment, she was beheaded outside the Small West Gate on September 3, 1839. Her daughter, Agatha Yi, was martyred the following January.
Spirituality
The spirituality of Barbara Kwon Hui is a faith that offers the whole family to God. With her husband she opened their home to the Church, and the whole family walked together in faith. Even the pain of losing a loved one first could not break her faith.
Reflection
Barbara Kwon Hui and her family opened their home to the Church community. How is my family walking together in faith? This week, could we go to Mass together and pray for one another?
