Korean laywoman who kept the faith in the persecution of 1839 and was martyred on May 27, 1839.
Life
Barbara Yi, born in 1825, was a young virgin martyred at a very early age. She grew up in the faith from childhood and was arrested with other believers in the persecution of 1839.
Though only a girl, she did not deny her faith in the face of the officials' persuasion and punishment. Enduring the suffering and illness of prison, she died there on May 27, 1839. She is one of the youngest martyrs among the 103 saints.
Spirituality
The spirituality of Barbara Yi is the clear faith of a child. She was young in years, but in faith she was the equal of any adult. Her pure trust in the Lord gave her strength to overcome fear.
Reflection
Barbara Yi held firmly to her faith at a very young age. What example of faith am I giving to the children and young people of my parish? Today, could I pray for my children or the Sunday school students?
