Bernardine Realino worked as a lawyer and civil official before entering the Jesuits and becoming a priest. In Lecce he spent more than forty years hearing confessions and serving the poor.

Life

Saint Bernardine Realino was born in 1530 in Carpi, Italy. He studied law, became a lawyer, and served capably as a magistrate and administrator in several cities.

His desire to give himself wholly to God grew, and in 1564 he entered the Society of Jesus. After ordination he ministered in Naples and was then sent to Lecce in southern Italy, where for more than forty years he devoted himself to confession, preaching and the care of the poor and the sick. He died in Lecce in 1616 and was canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1947.

Spirituality

Saint Bernardine's spirituality is a steady love sustained for decades in one place. Setting aside worldly success, he gave his whole life to the people of one city and was a kind and gentle shepherd to all. His gentleness drew many people to confession.

Reflection

Saint Bernardine served the people of one city for forty years. How can I keep loving faithfully in the community where I am right now?
