Martyred for the faith at outside Seosomun, Seoul in the Sinyu persecution, January 29, 1802. Beatified by Pope Francis on August 16, 2014.
Life
Gervase Son Gyeong-yun was a commoner believer who ran a medicinal herb shop in Seoul. He served as a catechist leader (hoejang), caring for believers, leading prayer gatherings and serving the community.
Named as a Catholic leader when the persecution began in 1801, he hid in various places in Gyeonggi with his brother, but on hearing that his wife and children had been seized in his place he gave himself up. He weakened for a time at the police headquarters, but at the Hyeongjo he repented and held firmly to the faith. He was martyred with several other believers outside the Small West Gate in Seoul on January 29, 1802.
He was beatified by Pope Francis on August 16, 2014.
Spirituality
Gervase Son Gyeong-yun's spirituality is service that cares for the community. While continuing his trade, he looked after the faithful as their leader and completed that service in martyrdom. His life shows that the service of lay people is a strong pillar that holds up the Church.
