Lazarus of Bethany, the friend of Jesus whom he raised from the tomb.

Life

Saint Lazarus of Bethany was the brother of Martha and Mary and a friend whom Jesus loved. According to John's Gospel, when he fell ill and died, Jesus wept at his tomb, and four days after his death called out, Lazarus, come out, and raised him to life.

Many came to believe in Jesus because of this, and the Gospel tells of a later meal with Jesus in Lazarus's home. About his later life there are various traditions, such as that he became a bishop in Cyprus or travelled to France, but none is certain.

Since 2021 the Church has remembered him together with Martha and Mary on July 29.

Spirituality

The spirituality of Lazarus is friendship with Jesus. The Gospels record not a single word from him, yet he is remembered as one whom Jesus loved. His return to life is a sign pointing ahead to the life of Christ that is stronger than death.

Reflection

Jesus wept at the death of his friend; the Lord feels our grief too. Is there a place in your life that feels like a tomb, which you could entrust to him and ask him to call back to life?
