Korean laywoman who kept the faith in the persecution of 1839 and was martyred on May 24, 1839.

Life

Lucia Pak Hui-sun was born in 1801 and entered the royal palace as a court lady at a young age. While living there she came to know the Catholic faith, and she left the palace so that she could live it fully. For a court lady, leaving the palace was no easy thing.

After leaving, she lived her faith together with her elder sister, Maria Pak Kun-a-gi, and helped other believers. Arrested in the persecution of 1839, she stood firm under cruel torture and was beheaded outside the Small West Gate on May 24, 1839. Her sister Maria was martyred that September.

Spirituality

The spirituality of Lucia Pak Hui-sun is the freedom of letting go for the Lord. She chose the path of serving God over the secure life of the palace. Her life shows that when we let go of what the world prizes, we find the true treasure.

Reflection

Lucia Pak Hui-sun gave up life in the palace for the sake of her faith. What am I holding onto more tightly than the Lord? Today, could I pray and offer that one thing to Him?
