Sent from Rome to Gaul, he became the first Bishop of Toulouse. When he refused to take part in a pagan sacrifice, a mob is said to have tied him to a bull, which dragged him to his death.

Life

Saint Saturninus is honored as the first bishop of Toulouse, sent to Gaul in the mid-third century. His story is preserved in a relatively early account of his martyrdom, though the details of his life are not known for certain.

According to tradition, he led the Christian community in Toulouse and, when he refused to offer sacrifice as he passed a pagan temple, a mob tied him to a bull, which dragged him to his death. This is thought to have happened around 250, and the Basilica of Saint-Sernin was later built over his tomb. The Church remembers him on November 29.

Spirituality

Saturninus's spirituality is the fidelity of a pioneer missionary who guarded his community under persecution. Leading a small band of Christians, he made the faith visible in the midst of pagan society and, refusing idolatry, remained faithful to Christ alone.

Reflection

Saturninus would not bow before idols. What idols, such as money or success, am I putting ahead of God today?
