Martyred for the faith at outside Seosomun, Seoul in the Sinyu persecution, July 2, 1801. Beatified by Pope Francis on August 16, 2014.

Life

Viviana Mun Yeong-in was a virgin who had served as a palace lady in the royal court. After coming to know the Catholic faith, she embraced it and chose a life of virginity given to God.

After she was expelled from the palace for being a Catholic, she lived in Cheongseok-dong and devoted herself to helping the Church, and in 1800 she lent a house to Augustine Jeong Yak-jong when he moved to Seoul. Arrested in the Sinyu persecution of 1801, she did not yield her faith despite severe punishment, and she was martyred outside Seosomun in Seoul on July 2, 1801, together with Columba Kang Wan-suk and others.

On August 16, 2014, Pope Francis beatified her among Paul Yun Ji-chung and 123 companion martyrs.

Spirituality

Viviana Mun Yeong-in's spirituality is a pure heart fixed on God alone. Going beyond her life as a palace lady, she sought to belong wholly to God. Her faith, unbroken even in suffering, shows how deep that desire was.

Reflection

Viviana Mun Yeong-in sought to belong to God alone. What is my heart most caught up in right now? Today, let us offer a short prayer turning that heart back to God.
